VIRGINIA WILLIAMS GUNTER

Virginia Gunter, age 100, of Hillsborough, NC, formerly of Columbus, MS, left this life for her eternal home on August 25, 2026.

Funeral services will be Monday, August 31, 2026, at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Blaha officiating. Visitation will be at 1:00 PM on Monday followed by the service at 2:00 PM. The interment will immediately follow at Friendship Cemetery.

Mrs. Gunter was born April 5, 1926, near Caledonia, MS, to the late William Polk Williams and Ida Smith Williams. Her life focused on her love of God and family. She was a devoted homemaker, and everyone always wanted to eat at Jenny’s table. After graduating from high school during WWII, she worked for a period at McClelland’s in Columbus and years later at Three Sisters, also in Columbus. She often mentioned that after high school she had wanted to become a nurse. That was not to be; however, over the years she cared for and nursed numerous family members – it was in her nature to care for others. During her husband’s 27-year military career she made a home for her family in the numerous places they lived.

In addition to her parents and her husband of 65 years, Jack Gunter, she was predeceased by her daughter, Annelle G. Hochhauser, two brothers, and two sisters. She is survived by sons Jackie T. Gunter and wife Martha of Greenville, MS, and C. Phillip Gunter and wife Ann of Hillsborough, NC, 9 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Pallbearers will be Michael Hinton, Beau Hochhauser, Michael Blackledge, Scott Williams, Tommy Gunter, and Steve Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Wilson, Jacky Triplett, Jimmy McDaniel, Dan Cox, Bobby Richardson, and David Shields.
