Ruth Kohers

Ruth Hollmann Kohers, 89, of Starkville, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2026.

Born in Bielefeld, Germany, Ruth devoted her life to her family as a loving wife and mother. Having worked in her family’s bakery in Germany from a young age, she was a talented baker and loved to cook for her family and friends. She provided kindness and comfort to many throughout her life and was actively involved in the community. In the days before air conditioning, she was known as the “popsicle lady” who brought popsicles to children at the local public schools.

Ruth enjoyed her garden clubs and bridge clubs, treasuring the friendships she built there over the years. She also had a special fondness for hummingbirds, and the Audubon Society of Birmingham regularly visited her home each winter to tag and document the special winter hummingbirds that returned to her yard season after season.

Ruth is survived by her husband of 61 years, Theodor; her children, Gerald Kohers and Ninon Kohers Sutton; and her four grandchildren, Jessica, Nicole, Casey, and Laina. Her genuine kindness and compassion live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

The family will hold a private service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
