Sidney Jere Manhein

Sidney Jere Manhein (AKA Robert Jere Manhein), 82 of Columbus, Mississippi, died January 6, 2024, at Baptist Memorial Golden Triangle Hospital.

Jere was born on November 6, 1941, in Jackson, Tennessee, to Catherine Sue Thompson and Jackson Fayette Manhein, Sr. He attended Jackson High and Southside High School, as well as his beloved Lambuth College in Jackson, where his school buddies would lovingly call him “Heinie” for the rest of his life. He received his M.Ed. from the University of Memphis and went on to study Neuro Linguistic Programming with pioneer Richard Bandler.  His involvement in Cursillo was instrumental to centering his life on God and his church.

Jere’s passion for traveling and serving others took him to Canada and New Mexico working with indigenous peoples. He also treasured his time in the United Kingdom, counseling Anglican and Methodist seminarians and missionaries in Nottingham and Derbyshire.

Jere loved his family, his friends and helping people. He was fun loving and a jokester at heart. Jere never met a stranger, often stopping in a parking lot to get to know someone and put a smile on their face. He loved exercising at the YMCA, going to baseball games and eating healthy food. He had an affinity for history and he deeply loved Jesus. His favorite place was at his beach cottage on Amelia Island, Florida, watching the sunrise.

Jere is survived by his wife, Louise McAnulty Manhein, of Columbus, Elizabeth Feeney (Will) Richardson of Manassas, Virginia, and Katherine Feeney (Ryan) Munson of Columbus, Mississippi. Grandchildren include Asa, Leah, Hattie, and Myles Richardson as well as Molly, Luke, and Hannah Munson.

Jere was predeceased by his brother, Jackson Fayette Manhein, Jr. Memorial service will be held on Friday February 2, 2024 at 10 AM, at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Columbus. At a later date a graveside service and burial will be at Polk Cemetery in Bolivar, Tennessee.
