HAZEL LAWRENCE

Hazel Blalock Lawrence, 93, passed away at the Fayette Medical Center on July 19, 2021.

Ms. Lawrence was born on March 1, 1928. She was a resident of Morningview Estates and was a former resident of Tabernacle. Ms. Lawrence taught elementary school for several years but retired as a nurse with Community Counseling. She also taught nursing at Mississippi University for Women and was a RN at Trinity Healthcare. She belonged to several honorary and civic organizations and was also honored to be named Mississippi Nurse of the Year and Mississippi Psychology Nurse of the year.  She was a 1946 graduate of New Hope High School and a graduate of Mississippi University for Women with BS, EDS and Masters degrees in elementary education and RN, BS and Masters degrees in nursing. She was a charter member of the First Independent Methodist Church where she also served as teacher and Board Chair for many years. She was also a member of the Stateline Sew Happy Quilting Group, Tabernacle Homemakers Club, and the Ladies Auxiliary. Her hobbies were quilting, gardening and cooking.

She was preceded in death by her husband (Retired) Lt. Colonel Trafford Lawrence, parents Robert Hunter and Mattie Logan Blalock; sisters Ruth Bailey, Flora Blalock, Hilda Pendley; brothers Robert Blalock, Cecil Blalock, John Wallace (J. W.) Blalock, and step-son, Tucker Lawrence.

Ms. Lawrence is survived by her sister Patricia (Jim) Burt; brothers Jimmy Blalock, and Gene Blalock; step-son Lee Lawrence (Peggy); step-granddaughters Cassie Dahlem, Pamela Fragale, Renea Crowley, Katie Lawrence; step-grandsons Stephen, Jason, Alex, Hunter and Preston Lawrence. She is also survived by Wanda Gail Ray, special friend to the Blalock family.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church Columbus on Friday, July 23 with Bro. Gary Shelton officiating. Visitation is from 12:00 noon until service time. Burial will follow in the Millport City Cemetery. Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home & Crematory, College Street Location is in charge of arrangements.


In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Hazel Blalock Lawrence Nursing Scholarship at Mississippi University for Women or the            First Independent Methodist Church Hazel Blalock Lawrence Library.
