Charlotte Carr Sanders

June 23, 1942 — April 29, 2022

Charlotte Carr Sanders, 79, entered the larger life on April 29, 2022, at home.

Charlotte was born on June 23, 1942 to the late Horace Jewell Carr and Ada Fields Carr.

She was a graduate of S.D. Lee High School where she was a majorette and played clarinet in the marching band. She continued her education at Mississippi University for Women where she earned a degree in English and was a member of the Silhouette Social Club and Maskers Washboard Band.

She was heavily involved with the Junior Auxiliary of Columbus and spent many years spearheading the pageant for the yearly Charity Ball. She also spent countless hours volunteering with Columbus Swim Association. Charlotte was a founding member of the Northwood Garden Club and contributed her typing skills and recipes to the publication of A Grand Heritage Cookbook.

After moving to Memphis in 1984, Charlotte furthered her education by earning a Masters degree in Counseling from the University of Memphis. She was a teacher and counselor with the Memphis City Schools for over thirty years. Charlotte took great pride in helping her students receive scholarships to colleges across the nation. Charlotte was a communicant of Grace St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

Following retirement, Charlotte became a Master Gardener and assisted Shelby County School District with class scheduling.

She returned to Columbus in 2017 to be closer to her grandchildren. She enjoyed various cookbook clubs, card groups and serving as a docent at the Lee Home. Charlotte was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church where she served on the Altar Guild.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Bonnie Jean Carr, and daughter, Winifred Anne Sanders.

She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Sanders McMullen (Nat) and her son, William Lee Sanders III (Ginny), her grandchildren William Lee Sanders IV (Liam) and Katherine Carr Sanders (Kate) as well as her sister, Rebecca Carr Burks, nephews Drew Burks (Becca) and Craig Burks (Jennifer) and great-niece, Ada Grace Burks.

Visitation will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Tuesday, May 3rd at 10:00 am. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 am concluding with burial at Friendship Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Will Sanders, Liam Sanders, Nat McMullen, Craig Burks, Drew Burks and Juddie Boyd. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Andrews, Clint Hewes, Robert Prince, Allen Cox and George Saig.
