BILLY HERRING - Bill "Billy" Gene Herring. age 89, of Columbus, MS, passed away on July 11, 2026.  Memorial services will be Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at 5:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.  Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until the time of the service.

He was born on February 4, 1937, in Enterprise, AL, to the late Porter and Ruth Herring.  He was raised a share cropper in Dale County, Alabama, where he learned to pick cotton at the age of 4 years old.  He became a Butcher in 1955, which landed him a career that spanned over 60 years with the Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P), Sunflower Grocery, and Prairie Meat Company.  Bill loved Alabama football and followed them his entire life.  He enjoyed trotlining for catfish on the Tombigbee River and hunting.  "His biggest hobby in life was hardwork,"  having worked until he was 85 years old, he worked not because he needed it but because he loved having a purpose.

Bill taught that work ethic to all three sons and many past employees that worked for him over the last six decades.  Bill always prided himself as Creating men from Boys through hardwork.  We would like to recognize our mother, Darlene Karg, and husband Robbie Karg for assisting Bill through difficult days and times of his life.  Darlene and Robbie were special people to Bill, and their love and compassion are greatly appreciated and will not be forgotten.

He is survived by his sons, Kenny Tice (Michelle), Corey Herring, and Chris Herring, grandchildren, Phillip Tice, Tristan Herring, Marley Kate Herring, and Avery Grace Herring, and great grandchildren, Lenox Tice, Aniston Tice, and Kinley Pounders.
