Jo Alyce Moore
Jo Alyce Bell Moore of Ethelsville, Alabama, age 95, passed away at her home on September 17, 2025. Services will be held Sunday September 21, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Forest United Methodist Church in Ethelsville, burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday September 20, 2025 fron 5 until 7 at Memorial Funeral Home and again Sunday one hour prior to service at the church.
Mrs. Moore was born in Ethelsville, Alabama on March 19, 1930 to the late Marguerite Watkins Bell and the late Joseph N. Bell. Preceding her in death was her husband of 73 years, James Lawrence Moore and brother, William Bell.
Mrs. Moore was a 1948 graduate of Liberty High School in Ethelsville, Alabama where she was the valedictorian of her class. After attending the University of West Alabama for 3 years she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. A Dean’s List student and member of the debate team, Mrs. Moore majored in Social Studies and English.
In August of 1965, Mrs. Moore completed her studies at the University of Alabama earning a Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education.
On Christmas Day in 1950, she married her high school sweetheart, James Lawrence Moore of Ethelsville. Jo Alyce began her teaching career at Liberty School in the fall of 1951 and remained there until 1967. With the closure of Liberty School, she continued to teach at Reform Elementary in Reform, Alabama until her retirement in 1985. One year after retiring, Jo Alyce felt the call to continue teaching at Creative Playland Kindergarten in Caledonia, Mississippi. Jo Alyce was an active member of
Forest United Methodist Church serving as a Sunday School teacher, church treasurer and several committees. She was a United Methodist Certified Lay Speaker and a BSF certified Bible instructor. She was member of Alpha Delta Kappa sorority, Daughters of the American Revolution (Bernard Romans Chapter) and Eagle Forum.
Jo Alyce enjoyed reading, cooking, gardening and fishing. She created a greeting card ministry to brighten days, console grief and celebrate birthdays and anniversaries of family, friends and neighbors.
She is survived by three children, Teresa Winter (Alan), Tina Rakestraw (Tyre) and Tim Moore (Vanessa); granddaughter Melanie Alyce Winter and two grandsons, Chris Winter and Adam Moore (Klaire). One great-granddaughter, Kendell Rae Moore and two great-grandsons, Timothy Adam Moore, Jr. and Reeder James Moore.
Five step-granddaughters: Brigitte Sosebee (Greg), Christy McBride (Kip), Amy Helms, Tara Meeks (Bill), Tyra Kelly (Bill); four first cousins and several nieces and nephews.
Love and appreciation to her exceptional caregivers Annie Pearl Gore, Sara Shaw, Christy Shelton, Wanda Guy, Dot Harcrow and Pam Sturgin.
Pallbearers will be Adam Moore, Chris Winter, Scott Bell, Ben Sosebee and Steven McLaurin
