Josephine "Momma Joe" Sanderson McElhenney, 82, died Monday, July 13, 2015 at Windsor Place. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gunter & Peel Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home, with Rev. Melvin Mordecai officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM in the Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery in Union, MS with Rev. John Stephens, officiating. The daughter of the late William E. and Catherine Virginia Greene Sanderson, Momma Joe was born January 27, 1933 in Scott County, MS. She retained her church membership at Salem Baptist Church in Newton County, MS. She was employed as a seamstress at Seminole Manufacturing in Columbus and several other garments plants. Her last employer was The Commercial Dispatch for whom she delivered newspapers for several years. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Alton McElhenney, her son Andy McElhenney, her daughter and son-in-law Carolyn and Jerry Stevens, grandsons Bruce Stevens, James Alton Ferguson and granddaughter Sandy Ferguson and all of her brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughter Jo An Estes of Columbus, her son and daughter -in-law Larry and Sheila McElhenney of Fayette, AL, her granddaughter Carla Marie McElhenney and four great grandchildren. Family and Friends will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to Special Olympics, 1133 19th St., NW, Washington, DC 20036 or to the Donor's favorite charity.
