George Waymon Fendley went to be with his Lord on October 28, 2015 at Windsor Place surrounded by family and friends. Services will be held Saturday, October 31, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbus, MS with Dr. Bill Duncan presiding. Burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday October 30, 2015 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM. He was born in Columbus, MS on February 21, 1937, where he lived all his life except for military service years. He was preceded in death by mother Bea Ward Land Fendley, father Vester Lee Fendley and brother John Wales Land. A long time member of East End Baptist Church, he was active in the Sanctuary Choir, Senior Choir, Super Seniors and Sunday School. He was a member of Civil Air Patrol, Army National Guard, US Air Force, and Air Force Reserves. He attended MS Police academy, FBI Academy, and EOD at Red Stone Arsenal, and was a Mason and a Shiner. His work history included Caldwell Furniture, BF Goodrich, National Life Ins, US Air Force, and the Columbus Police department. He enjoyed all his years at the Columbus Police Department. As the Public Relations Officer at the Columbus Police Department, he was a regular speaker for many civic clubs. He enjoyed the most working with young people and affected many young lives as "Officer Friendly", teaching that program along with "Patch The Pony" in both city and county schools. He took on the persona of Officer Friendly and so was known to many as "Friendly Fendley". He was honored as Policeman of the Year and was presented an award by Sen. John Stennis, and was a life member and Past President of the TMSPOA- Tennessee Mississippi Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association. George formed an Explorer Scout troop in Law Enforcement, and many of the young people in the troop went on to have careers in law enforcement, and some of them have since retired. He wore many hats at CPD during his career; he was also training and range officer, taught a gun safety class for women, and was radio dispatcher. As a member of the police pistol team, he brought home a host of trophies representing the department. His hobbies were hunting, fishing, scuba diving, sky diving, archery, camping and working in the yard, and garden. After retirement from the CPD, his love of camping led him to becoming a campground attendant as a contractor for the Corps of Engineers for years at Blue Bluff in Aberdeen and at DeWayne Hayes Day Use in Columbus. He is survived by wife Adeline Kerr Fendley, daughter Anna Katherine, and son George Lee, three grandchildren, five great- grandchildren, sister Jane Marie Harper (William), Columbus and brother William H Fendley (Pat), West Point, MS., and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be George Waymon Fendley II, Andy Hubbard, Hank Vaiden, Gary Moore, Mel Sharpe and Ernie Smith. Honorary pall bearers will be Dot and Richard Simmons, Bible Book Sunday School class, Sanctuary choir, Senior Adult Choir, and Tom and Mollye Cash, and officers of the Columbus Police Department.
